Steroids are a general class of chemical substances that are structurally related to one another and share the same chemical skeleton. They were first created in the nineteen-thirties, and are related to the hormone testosterone. Many steroids are biologically active hormone’s that control the number of the body’s metabolic processes.
There are many negative side effects of steroids, both mental and physical. The negative physical effects of steroids are premature balding or hair loss, nausea and vomiting, higher risk of injuring muscles and tendons, jaundice, liver damage, testicular shrinkage, breast development, sterility, and stunted growth. The mental side effects of steroids are dizziness, mood swings including anger, aggression, and depression, hallucinations, paranoia, and insomnia. These negative side effects heavily outweigh the few positives of steroids.
There are a few exceptions as to when steroids should be used. Some steroids are medically prescribed for conditions like to stimulate bone growth and appetite, to treat chronic wasting conditions, and to induce puberty in boys. Steroids should only be used when prescribed by a doctor.
Steroids are mainly used to enhance the performance of athletes. In the sports world steroids is taken very seriously. There are major consequences for steroid use in all of the major U.S. sports. Steroid usage is considered a form of cheating.
