We know that our military has mental evaluations every time they deploy and return, but I do not believe that is enough. We have seen the homicide and suicide rates high with our soldiers, because they are having a hard time readjusting to civilian life after they have gone to combat. They get evaluated one time after they come back and then sent on their way, but I think they should be continually monitored for at least a month after to be sure nothing comes up while back at home. Not only do I believe they should have these evaluations after becoming a soldier, but also while they are enlistees.
Our soldiers are seeing things in combat that would mess with anyone’s head, but they also have to kill which can really affect them with nightmares and daily living. Most of our soldiers get diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder and then are ignored by their command. Most soldiers do not return when they start showing an increase in their symptoms, because they get accused of malingering or cowardice. Having this kind of harassment, while they are having emotional or psychiatric problems, makes it even more for our soldiers to handle. It should be mandatory that the soldiers that return from combat go for an evaluation once a week, this way they would not have to deal with the harassment and the psychiatrist can be sure their state of mind is alright.
We are having soldiers coming home all the time that are shooting their families, because they cannot cope and did not have more thorough evaluations. In 2003, there were five soldiers arrested in Columbus for murders, who were engaged in some of Iraq’s bloodiest battles. In 2002 there were four soldiers that killed their wives after returning from Afghanistan and of them ended up committing suicide. There were 10 soldiers in the Fourth Brigade Combat Team to commit murder and attempted murder between 2005 and 2008 at Fort Carson, CO.
