Social Class Effects on Health
By taking an in-depth look at the trials, tribulations, struggles and triumphs of heart attack patients in different social classes; one may achieve a clear view of the influences, social class has on health.   Janny Scott says, “Heart attack is a window on the effects of social class on health”.   For instance, in the case of Mr. Miele’s heart attack, once inside of the ambulance he was given a choice.   He had the option to either be a patient at Bellevue, a city run hospital or Tisch Hospital, part of New York University Medical Center, an academic center with relatively affluent patients.   Next we have Mr. Wilson, another heart attack survivor, was also given a choice.   His options were not as attractive as Mr. Miele’s.   Mr. Wilson was given the option of either going to The Brooklyn Hospital center or Woodhull Medical and Mental Health Center a city run Hospital that serves three of Brooklyn’s poorest neighborhoods.   By the way neither of the two hospitals offered to Mr. Wilson, had state permission to do an angioplasty, a procedure that our beloved Mr. Miele would receive at Tisch.   Last but not least, in the eyes of few, we have Mrs. Gora, a heart attack survivor who was not given a choice of hospitals to attend.   Mrs. Gora was simply taken no questions asked to Woodhull, the same hospital rejected by Mr. Wilson.   These three situations involving different persons begin to open the window, so that one may see the effects social class has on a person’s health.   This window shows us that the higher your social class the better the opportunity you have to access the best choices to improve your health.
