Prisoner’s Rights (AIDS/HIV)
In prisons across the nation, the HIV and AIDS outbreak presents a major challenge. Prisoners are at an exceptional possibility for infection, considering that prisons are a high-risk environment for HIV transmission. The prevalence within prisons is originally higher than it would be in the general community. However, when it comes to solving the problem, prisoners are often neglected and overlooked. Inmates rarely receive the protection they deserve to reduce the HIV/AIDS transmission. Inmates may not always be aware if they are infected because not all prisons and jails offer HIV testing. Although, those who are diagnosed, in many facilities are unable to establish a lifesaving treatment for those inmates, they also receive very little health care and lack of food. Due to overcrowded prisons the HIV infection is at risk. Transmissions are especially caused by injections of drugs, sexual behavior as well as body piercings and tattooing. Within prisons, it has become a hassle when it comes to maintaining the injection equipment sanitized and safe. Inmates tend to share unsterilized needles, which in the long run may lead to a punishable offence to oneself.
In the gist of keeping correctional officers and other inmates who are HIV negative safe, it would make a difference if those who are infected were housed separately. A support network for these people should be provided. People who are infected aren’t any different from any other human being, well of course they’re sick, but they are still human and shouldn’t be treated any different. But in cases like these, when they are inmates in a prison changes need to be made so that others are not affected by the disease. Depending on the rules of the facility those who are infected may be segregated from assignments inmates do as a group.
