Values can be defined as what is found important and morally right or wrong in a culture. Values are also a collective conception of what is considered good or desirable and what is bad or undesirable by members of a society. The values of a culture can be seen through the actions of the member s of a society, including the way they act, think, talk, and express themselves. Music is one of the biggest employers of those looking to express their emotions and when emotions are revealed, so are values.
The 1960’s was a time of youth radicalism due to the new ways introduced by the hippies and counterculture. The rise of the counterculture created a huge market for rock, soul, pop, reggae and blues artists. The principles of the music centered on self-worth, respect, feminism, freedom, love, adventure, and individualism. These values were expressed undyingly in the lyrics of the artists in the 1960’s and the ideas soon became to represent the dominant popular culture of the time. 1960’s artists such as The Rolling Stones, The Rascals, Aretha Franklin, Gaye Marvin, and Steppenwolf all used their music to express these values, so well that this decade’s artists are claimed to be the most influential in history.
The Rolling Stones released the song “Satisfaction” in June of 1965 to watch it seize the top of the American charts for four full weeks. The Rolling Stones used this song to express the value of the importance of the individual and their creativity. When the Stones’ sing “supposed to fire my imagination” they are stressing their feelings of anti-commercialism because of how it has tried to condemn the expressions of individualistic thinkers (Stones). The line “When I’m watchin’ my TV, and that man comes on to tell me, how white my shirts can be” also expresses the Stone’s feelings of anti-commercialism by giving an example of how the media is trying to silence creative thinking and conform their audience (Stones).
