Stem cells are cells found in all multi-cellular organisms. They have the ability to renew themselves
through cell division and it is also transformed from a less specialized cell to a more specialized cell type.
There are two broad types of mammalian stem cells namely the embryonic stem cells which are
isolated from the inner cell mass of blastocysts and the adult stem cells that are found in the adult
tissues. The stem cells in a developing embryo are transformed into a more specialized embryonic tissue
while in an adult organism, the stem cells or progenitor cells serves as a repair system for the
body. Stem cells can now be transformed and grown into more specialized cells with cells of various
tissues such as muscles or nerves through cell culture.
