Stem Cells

Stem cells are cells found in all multi-cellular organisms. They have the ability to renew themselves
through cell division and it is also transformed from a less specialized cell to a more specialized cell type.
There are two broad types of mammalian stem cells namely the embryonic stem cells which are
isolated from the inner cell mass of blastocysts and the adult stem cells that are found in the adult
tissues. The stem cells in a developing embryo are transformed into a more specialized embryonic tissue
while in an adult organism, the stem cells or progenitor cells serves as a repair system for the
body. Stem cells can now be transformed and grown into more specialized cells with cells of various
tissues such as muscles or nerves through cell culture.

Stem cell treatment is a strategy that introduces new cells into damaged tissue in order to treat disease
or injury. Many researchers in the medical field believe that stem call treatment can change the face of
human disease and it can also lessen the suffering of the people that has severely damaged   body parts.
Stem cells has the ability to self renew offers significant chances for generation of tissues that can
potentially replace diseased and damaged areas in the body, with low risk of rejection and side
effects. There are many stem cell therapeutics that exist nowadays but most of them are only in their
experimental stages and it is also costly with the exception of bone marrow transplant. Medical
researchers believe that adult stem cells and embryonic stem cells can soon treat cancer, spinal cord
injury, brain damaged, heart damaged, diabetes, baldness, deafness, neural birth defects and other
types of neurological disorders. Before applying stem cell therapeutics, more research should be done
to understand   stem cell behaviour as well as its mechanisms of its interaction with damaged or
diseased environment.
