Manny Ramirez, who will go down as one of baseball’s most feared hitters, was suspended for 50 games at the beginning of the 2009 season for using steroids. Home-run records and batting averages are steadily rising as steroids use is becoming more and more prevalent in Major League Baseball. Much of the professional baseball audience includes young high school and college athletes.   What do you think they assume about steroids?   High school and college athletes are now starting to use steroids, after seeing how much success professional athletes have, without realizing the risks. There are no drug tests in high schools. Young athletes will give anything for that number-one rank, that first-team all-state recognition, that state championship. Because young athletes are not likely to get caught using steroids, they want a competitive edge; and because professional baseball players are idols to young athletes, they negatively influence high school and college athletes to use illegal steroids.
Currently, no drug-testing is implemented in high school. Most everyone thinks high-school athletes are too young to be thinking about performance-enhancing drugs. However, this is not the case. According to the Center of Disease Control and Prevention, 6.8% of high-school males and 5.3% of high-school females have used steroids to enhance their athletic performance. These percentages do not even include athletes who do not want to admit using steroids. It is estimated that 5%-7% of professional baseball players use steroids. The estimated percentage of high school males using steroids is higher than the 5%-7% percentage of professional baseball players! How can that be? Because of the high publicity, high school and college athletes see Major League baseball players get punished for steroid use, but they do not believe they can get caught…simply because they are in school.   Professional baseball players should continue to be a positive—not negative--influence on young...
