The Rising Epidemic of Adolescent Suicide

“Exploding outwardly like the two teenagers at Columbine High School, these kids are exploding on the inside, ready to give it all up” (Hollandsworth 81).   Marty Cirkiel, a small-time lawyer practicing just outside of Austin in Texas, made this bold statement in order to describe the emotional state of students that committed suicide after relentless and cruel bullying in their respective schools.   Research has shown that adolescents tend to internalize negative emotional experiences.   Loved ones often learn of one’s heartache and sense of hopelessness when it is too late.   Psychologists and numerous other professionals that work with teenagers have made the observation that adolescents are experiencing the most difficult transitional time in life.   Social roles are being identified, new relationships develop, physiological changes are occurring and teenagers are being forced to make decisions concerning the future.   Even though this time in a young person’s life is normally reserved for friendship activities that adults would not usually partake in, it causes adolescents a large amount of stress, confusion, self-doubt, and pressure.   Difficulties adapting can result in an outcry for help, finding suicide as the only adequate solution.   Suicide during adolescence has become a widespread epidemic.   As time passes, the extreme feelings of hopelessness and emptiness that suicidal people experience may not disappear but will eventually decrease.   Therefore, preventing teenagers from making this tragic mistake to end their lives can be prevented.
The act of committing suicide is the 11th leading cause of death in the United States, accounting for more that 34,000 deaths per year (Ilgen 1).   With regard to adolescents, suicide is the third leading cause of death of individuals between ages 15 and 24 (Frey 1).   These statistics show a very tragic pattern that is currently sweeping the nation.   Teenagers find themselves at a...
