Jealousy makes sisters and brother start fighting and arguing. The parents have to clean up the problems and keep the family together. Then the parent does not have the ability to do that, because she is confused, the relationship of the family is unstable. A small and unimportant dress can blew up the relationship of the family for real.   In “The Dress” you will see the outcome of the above-mentioned problems.
It is during the celebration of the mothers forty years old birthday the short story takes place. The affair of the two sisters and the mother is getting even worse meanwhile Rachel finds her dress disappeared. Obvious does Rachel suspect Flora for the stolen dress. The family contains Rachel, Flora and the mother. Flora and Rachel are children of divorced parents and they live at the mother. Rachel, who owns a nice and expensive dress, seems to be the proud, beautiful, and the lucky sister. Flora is naturally jealous on her sister and this explains why she steels the dress.
We are deep into the Rachel’s thoughts in which the point of view is focused. The mind of Rachel tells us about the circumstances and the standards in the family. You get the impression that problems are ignored and the problems are not debatable. Sentences like this tells us.   “...Rachel knew that she would have to be pleasant, to forget about her stolen dress, wear something else, and smile”. (page 1 line 17). Generally you have to say loud if there is something you are unpleasant about. Psychological repression does not help. Communication is of great importance in all kinds of relationships. Maybe Rachel would have allowed Flora to rent her dress if Flora had asked. It is not better to ask for forgiveness than to ask for permission.
