“The Last Song”
In many works of literature, a character has a significant effect on other characters which
Includes a novel written by Nicholas Sparks, The Last Song. When the protagonist, Ronnie
Miller shows up at her dad’s house in Wrightsville Beach, North Carolina for the summer. She
has a negative attitude towards almost everything because of her father Steve who left the
family when she was little girl. Anyhow, when Ronnie finds herself in a situation where she
needs help from her father, her negativity turns to a positive attitude towards her dad.
The first example of Steve Miller,(Ronnie’s dad.) affecting Ronnie in a negative way is
when he divorced his wife and moved back to his home town Wrightsville Beach, North
Carolina. Ronnie was just a little kid and didn’t understand or know why her father left. She just
became very upset and angry at him which was the reason why she stopped playing the piano
even though that is what she did best at. The piano was a symbol of the relationship between
Ronnie and Steve. When she grew older, her mom thought it would be a good idea for Ronnie and her younger brother Jonah, to stay at their dad’s house for the summer. Ronnie didn’t want to go because she’s still mad at her dad. When she arrives at her dads house she treats her dad a very horrible way of showing she doesn’t care about him.
Even though Steve Miller affected Ronnie with a negative affection to the story he finally
found a way to affect Ronnie in a positive way. When he believed her, when she told
him she didn’t steal the cd at the store down at the beach. Steve Miller knew about Ronnie
stealing back in new York but still believed her which meant a lot to Ronnie. Ever since Ronnie

got to her father’s house she has been very rotten to him. There was no reason for him to
believe Ronnie for not stealing the CD, but instead when Ronnie asked him to believe her he told her “I believe you, Ronnie.” This was the turning point...
