Development, unity, and coherence create paragraphs and essays with a strong point and clear reasoning. The first element, development, helps the writer elaborate on the basic idea of his paragraph. The four steps in development are basic idea, explain, evidence, and interpret. The basic idea is the point the writer would like to make in the paragraph. This is the very first part of the paragraph because it is where the writer identifies the subject he will be writing on. Placing it at the very beginning allows the reader to know immediately what the topic is and is not confused by further information presented. The second step, explain, demonstrates why the basic idea is correct through either a real life or hypothetical example. This provides the reader with context for the basic idea. The third step in achieving proper development is evidence. This shows the reader why the writer's basic idea is correct. In this step, it is important to show statistical evidence or expert testimony to more easily convince the reader or the accurateness of the basic idea. The final step in development is interpret, or focus the reader's attention on the basic idea and not leave them to draw their own conclusions from the evidence the writer has provided. Using these steps properly and fully develops the basic idea the writer is trying to communicate to the reader.

The next important element is unity. Unity provides focus for the reader. It is the presence of a sentence that clearly identifies the main idea and provides details. This is very easy to achieve provided the steps to obtaining development are followed correctly. If the steps are followed and all paragraphs relate to the main focus of the essay, unity will naturally occur in the essay.
