The case against Tom Robinson was unjust. The town of Maycomb retains many prejudices. Because there were serious faults with the jury, there were pertinent incidents that occurred prior to the case not mentioned and most significantly there was evidence that was not thoroughly reviewed; given these circumstances, Tom Robinson did not receive a fair trial.
Given certain characteristics of the jury, Tom Robinson was not given a fair trial.
The jury took two hours to deliberate, showing that there were opposing views.. At least one juror was opposed to Tom Robinson’s conviction. The juror may have been bribed or threatened so that he would agree that To Robinson was guilty this being shown in the amount of time it took to deliberate. An extremely significant factor making the case unfair on Tom Robinson’s part is that he was tried by an all white jury implying that there is racism involved expressed in a quote from Atticus Finch. The one place where a man ought to get a square deal is in a courtroom, be he any color of the rainbow, but people have a way of carrying their resentments right into a jury box. As you grow older, you'll see white men cheat black men every day of your life.”(Lee150) This is not to say
that the jury was made up of only racists but being that the jury consisted of residents of Maycomb one is inclined to believe that many carry great prejudice towards other races. Tom Robinson faced prejudice from the group of people who ultimately held his fate in their hand .The prejudice he faces is from the mindset of an inferior African American dating back to pre-civil war times. Tom Robinson could not have received a fair trial when his jury was corrupt.
