Victor Frankel states “ The way in which a man accepts his fate and all the suffering it entails, the way in which he takes up his cross, gives him ample opportunity—even under the most difficult circumstances—to add a deeper meaning to his life.  It may remain brave, dignified and unselfish.  Or in the bitter fight for self-preservation he may forget his human dignity and become no more than an animal.  Here lies the chance for a man either to make use of or to forego the opportunities of attaining the moral virtues that a difficult situation may afford him.  And this decides whether he is worthy of his sufferings or not.” This statement can be applied to a number of characters in the stories we have been examining and can reflect a variety of real life sufferings that people endure every day. For the measure of a man cannot be determined by his actions when his life is in order, but how he conducts himself and how he reacts when faced with adversity. The measure of a man is only truly apparent when he has been stripped of his humanity and has endured significant suffering.
In the case of Dave Saunders from “The Man Who Was Almost a Man”, he has endured a life of poverty in which he works on a farm, essentially as a slave. When he turns 18, like most teenagers, he lets it get to his head automatically assumes that he is truly a man and feels as if he has to prove himself. I believe this was also heavily motivated by the poor living conditions he and his family were subject to, so Dave believed that he had to become a man for the sake of his family. As a result of the incident on the farm where Dave accidentally kills Jenny, the mule, he makes the decision to jump on a train and run away from home instead of facing Mr. Hawkins and his father and accepting responsibility for his mistakes.
