Over the past thirty years or so, video games have become incredibly popular means of entertainment in America. When efficiently moderated and correctly monitored, they are excellent sources of enjoyment for all ages. The problem is that these games are so often misused in today’s society, especially when it comes to small children. In fact, more than three fourths of our nation’s youth own video game consoles and about half of them play at least once a day. (Glazer 939-959)   Parents today blindly allow their young kids to shoot zombies and stab aliens for hours on end. And for what price?
Allowing children to play video games is a completely acceptable norm in today’s society. Most parents aren’t even slightly compelled to question it. They are seen as equivalent to any other toy or game, but many would be surprised if they took the time out to actually play these games for themselves. They are completely oblivious as to what their children are actually being exposed to.
Today’s parents have taken their ignorance of the video game frenzy to a whole new level (no pun intended).   Video games are a convenient distraction and effective diversion. Sadly enough, because they are such so advantageous, video games are used as babysitters by parents. What a better way to get those noisy kids out of Mom and Dad’s hair, right? (Wrong.) Video games have also evolved into means of reward (bribes). They are the ultimate compensation for behaving at the grocery store, completing homework, or getting all of their words spelled correctly on this weeks spelling test. Parents know how much their kids enjoy them so they take advantage of it. Chores, good behavior, even Christmas and birthdays: video games seem to be the go to gift. Games, consoles, controllers, and accessories can add up to hundreds, even thousands of dollars a year that parents are willing to spend to keep up with current trending equipment, so that their children are efficiently satisfied.
