Volunteerism creates a win-win situation for Volunteers and Beneficiaries
Volunteerism plays a very important role in today’s world where human resources are hard to come by. At present, volunteer Services exist to meet any person’s skills, abilities and time schedule. According to the Yearbook of Statistics, Singapore 2010, an estimated 41,500 people had chosen to be a part of volunteer organizations by the end of 2010. This figure is on the increase and is expected to reach a higher value by the end of 2011. This is a very encouraging sign for Singapore given the fact that it has a relatively small population. The reason for this increase is that volunteers are able to obtain benefits from the work they do and in return, play a significant role in benefitting the organization.
Benefits to the Individual
According to Merril (2005), “An individual volunteer benefits by having the opportunity to pursue an interest and consequently gain new information, develop new skills or enhance existing knowledge”. Volunteers develop societal and leadership skills through their interactions with clienteles, paid employees and co-volunteers. They cultivate a sense of pride and fulfillment while helping clients, and gain reputation while transforming themselves into well-known experts in a particular area. Moreover, elderly people looking for an emotional change can use this as an opportunity to relieve their stress. However, the organization also plays a major role in maintaining the motivation levels of the individuals.
Benefits to the Organization
Communities profit from a volunteer’s contribution, and the services they provide support individuals and families by addressing their needs and complications. Greater passion and understanding develops when volunteers share their enthusiasm for the establishment they are associated with and the work they do.
