Have you ever heard of global warming? At first it was just a theory but now the scientific consensus is that anthropogenic global warming is occurring. Seven of the eight warmest years on record have occurred since 2001 and the ten warmest years have all occurred since 1995 (www.chiefengineer.org). “Warmer than average global temperatures have become the new normal,” says Jay Lawrimore who is the chief of climate analysis at NOAA’s National Climatic Data Center (www.scientificamerican.com). There are many factors that determine the global temperature including solar activity, volcanic eruptions, Pacific decadal oscillation and global dimming. Whereas most of these events help balance the global temperature, the emission of greenhouse gases is the most influential yet preventable element responsible for global warming.
The greenhouse effect is when certain gases in the atmosphere absorb or trap heat in the lower atmosphere and then emits that heat in the form of radiation downward towards us.   A natural greenhouse effect is necessary for us to live on Earth because without it the temperature of the Earth would be about zero degrees Fahrenheit instead of its present fifty seven degrees Fahrenheit (www.chiefengineer.org). The greenhouse effect has become a problem due to the increase of human activity that involves raising the concentration of greenhouse gases, mainly carbon dioxide and consequently has hugely contributed to the global temperature increase. So now comes the big question, what will this warmer climate do to us and the world we live in? How does it being a little hotter outside change anything for me or the ones I love? If this increase in global temperature continues the Earth will experience melting of glaciers and other Arctic elements, increased sea levels along with warmer surface temperatures, shifts in habitats, and changes in the frequency and intensity of extreme weather events.
The melting of glaciers would cause many different problems....
