is Although the poem “What Work Is” and the poem “The Mill” are both about work, Philip Levine’s poem “What work is”, is the buildup of a lifetime of experiences, compromises, and disappointments and reads more like a monologue. Edwin Arlington Robinson's poem "The Mill" is a sad account of a double suicide brought on by the intrusion of the modern world. I read each of the poems several times and came to really enjoy both of them for different reasons. The styles of these poems are so diverse and yet they are both discussing similar subject matter. These two extremely unique poets are from different backgrounds and yet they can relate to each other when it comes to struggle, labor, wealth, and pain. Though the time these poems were written are very different, things in the economy have changed, however there is still one factor that remains, and that is the fight for survival can and will take a toll on a person.
Levine’s poem is about the buildup of a lifetime of experiences, compromises, and disappointments. It is a dialogue about starting your first job with the hope for a better life. This poem moves back and forth in time, touches on issues of race, religion, and education --and leaves the reader with a picture of working-class life from the 1940s to the present day.   “The Mill" on the other hand is a story about a double suicide brought on by the intrusion of the current world. The true subject is the massive influence of the ingenious mind, which seizes the miller's wife in its fearful grip. The only thing we know for certain is the miller's words, and everything else depends upon them. Even the woman herself is called only the miller's wife, with no name or identity. We know him by his words, and we know her by her thoughts. The Mill is more than the loss of a job but more the loss of his identity.
