Imagine having cycles of 45, 60 or 90 days of school and then having a break of 15 to 40 days off. This is what students at year round school’s do. It may seem like it is an educational innovation, but it has actually been around for quite some time. At first, places such as Baltimore and New York were sites of year round education because of population. Then the agrarian society changed the school’s calendar to the way it is today due to societal needs. Now that today’s society no longer follows agrarian calendars, many educators want to change and even extend the school year so it can increase opportunities and better academic achievements for all students. You are probably wondering, “Besides longer breaks, how else would it benefit me the student?” Year round schooling provides a more continuous learning pattern, and reduces the need for review. It can offer remediation or acceleration opportunities for special needs students during vacation intercessions; remediation or acceleration opportunities for special needs students during vacation intercession; greater retention of learning for all students which means less learning loss during breaks; more students can be accommodated at one school through multi-tracking which helps financial problems for schools also. Year round schooling or YRS is also beneficial towards teachers as well. They are able to earn extra income by teaching during the intercessions; experience less burnout and fatigue, just as students do, as a result of the shorter instructional cycles; they spend less time reviewing material they have already taught, and are absent from school less, much like students.
Year-round schooling is a deceptive term; it makes many students imagine that they would have to say adieu to summer traditions, such as camps or vacations.
